Car Seat Expiration Date: How to Find Yours

Every car seat has an expiration date, and using an expired seat puts your child at serious risk. Car seats expire because the plastic and materials degrade over time due to temperature changes, sun exposure, and normal wear. Safety standards also evolve, making older seats potentially non-compliant with current crash test requirements.

Where to Find Your Car Seat Expiration Date

Look for a white label or stamp on your car seat in one of these locations:

  • Bottom of the seat shell – Most common location, stamped directly into the plastic
  • Back of the seat – Often on a manufacturer label
  • Side of the seat – Near the LATCH connectors or belt path
  • On the base – For infant carrier seats with detachable bases
